The vocabulary grid is a simple and effective tool to help show student progress, in terms of their understanding of the key words and concepts in a lesson. Simply share with the students the key words that they are going to engage with in the lesson, and ask them to put that in the first column. Then ask the students to have a first go at sharing with you what they think the word means. This can highlight any misconceptions, or lack of understanding in the topic quite visibly. Later in the lesson, after new learning, the students can come back to the vocab grid and have a second go. New learning should be evident and the sophistication of the answer should also have been increased. A great and simple way to show progress.
