This is a description of how to use a circle map, which is one of David Hyerle's eight thinking maps, and a very useful tool for helping to make progress visible in the classroom, and to promote metacognition.
Primarily used as a starter, the map format is a template for students to share what they already know about a topic, and to find out where and when this learning happened. The circle is for students to write down what they already know and the box is the frame of reference - where they learned the information - was it in a lesson? which one? who with? was it an out of school experience? where? Later in the lesson the students can come back to the map, and in a different colour, they can write down what they now know, and what part of the lesson (or which activity) they learned it in. Good for showing progress!
